Snowed under

by Jolyon on 2 February, 2009

As usual, Britain — or more properly London — grinds to a halt as soon as less than temperate weather hits.

And as usual the local authorities have done absolutely zero to prepare, no gritting of roads, no extra capacity to get tube or bus drivers to work, nothing. Apparently, “All London bus services were withdrawn because of fears for passenger safety” — huh?

At the tube this morning, before the Central line shut altogether, I was told “yeah, mate, you’ll be fine for Bank, no problem”. They were 14 deep at the platform and the next train was indicated as being some 9 minutes off. No thanks.

So I walked in, through Temple (see Holga-ized picture of Lincoln’s Inn above) and down by the river. When I reached the City, my local branch of Leon was open with coffee and a bacon roll. The cheery Polish guy said “this is normal weather in my country”. Quite.
