US e-discovery changes

by jolyonpatten on October 26, 2006

Eric Sinrod writes on c|net about a big change in US law coming up on 1 December 2006. The new rules are designed to set out early structure, uniformity and predictability when it comes to e-discovery. Yet, from the very start of a case, the parties need to start evaluating with their IT teams [...]

Expert immunity revoked

by jolyonpatten on October 26, 2006

In something of a landmark decision the Court of Appeal have today decided in the case of Meadows -v- GMC that an expert can be subject to disciplinary action. Sir Anthony Clarke, Master of the Rolls, said: It seems to me that the solution to particular problems in particular professions must be reached by discussion [...]

Space shuttle launch

by jolyonpatten on October 25, 2006

OK, this is not really reinsurance related (save in the vaguest sense that it’s a bit risky and no doubt there’s a bucketload of RI protecting this one), but it’s such a lovely, indeed awesome (not in the American kid sense) shot that I thought I had to put it up. Absolutely beautiful and “was God [...]

Jorden Burt’s ‘Reinsurance Focus’

by jolyonpatten on October 25, 2006

US attorney, Roland Goss (no relation to Matt or Luke, I’m pretty sure ;-) ) alerted me to his team’s Reinsurance Focus, “a web blog covering items relating to reinsurance.” Roland and his colleagues are from East Coast firm, Jorden Burt LLP, and one of the good things about the blog is that it expands [...]

Class of 2005 caution

by jolyonpatten on October 25, 2006

Hello again. There’s an article here from the New York Sun on reasons why shareholders should be cautious about the new wave of reinsurers. The principal concerns they highlight are those linked factors, rates and capacity: The primary concern is that reinsurance rates, which popped after Katrina, Rita, and Wilma blew through, may not [...]

Berkshire take on Equitas run-off

by jolyonpatten on October 20, 2006

Well, this surprised me. A Lloyd’s press release today announced a transaction between Equitas and Berkshire Hathaway Inc. [which] once completed…will end the residual legal liabilities of Lloyd’s and bring finality to Names reinsured by Equitas. [emphasis added] This is undoubtedly welcome news for Lloyd’s Names (hello, James) who have been plagued by worries [...]

Virtual reinsurance

by jolyonpatten on October 14, 2006

Sometimes you wake up and find that your carefully planned outwards program has, in part at least, vanished in a puff of smoke. This often tends to happen not-unsimultaneously with your presentation of a large loss. However, to actually call your reinsurance company “Imagine International Reinsurance Limited” - which will inevitably be shortened to Imagine [...]

Uzbekistan reinsurance

by jolyonpatten on October 5, 2006

Good luck to them, I say. Uzbek carrier, Transinsurance, has recently been granted a licence by the Ministry of Finance to start writing reinsurance business, effectively the first domestic reinsurer in the market. Transinsurance Director-General Talgat Kasymov mentioned some of the perceived advantages in having a domestic RI carrier: Meanwhile, there is one more [...]

Operational Risk

by jolyonpatten on October 3, 2006

There’s rather a good article over at Risk & Insurance today about the desirability of not underestimating operational risk in the context of insurance and reinsurance companies. U.S. regulators worry about capital adequacy, of course, but in general have paid less attention to the underlying operational risks. One reason may have to do with [...]

Jurist

by jolyonpatten on October 3, 2006

[CAVEAT: More law than re-/insurance here, but still a good read] Jurist is an interesting, one-of-a-kind legal website. What is JURIST? JURIST (http://jurist.law.pitt.edu) is a Web-based legal news and real-time legal research service powered by a mostly-volunteer team of over 30 part-time law student reporters, editors and Web developers led by law professor Bernard [...]
