&lt;p&gt;An interesting corollary to the above extract is that, contrary to what people think, the probability of being in a plane crash is about the same as being in a serious car accident.  &lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;While there are far less plane accidents on an overall basis, the proportion of accidents is about the same when you consider the number of flights every day compared to journeys in cars.  &lt;/p&gt;
